In November, our Representative from the NJ State Park Police, Lt. Carmel Capoferri was tasked to help provide hurricane relief in San Juan, Puerto Rico for two weeks. Lt. Capoferri's duties included providing extra security in the area and assistance with traffic control. While she was there she also got to know the children of the local school, Escuela Republica de Brasil, which was still without power. The NJSOA donated $500 to assist the school with fresh water, food and school supplies which Lt. Capoferri delivered to them.

The NJSOA again proudly contributed to the Fred Baker Memorial Scholarship. Senior Correction Officer Fred Baker was murdered on July 30, 1997 while in the performance of his official duties at Bayside State Prison. The Fred Baker Memorial Scholarship fund awards a scholarship to one recipient in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties on an annual basis. The program was established to promote public awareness of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, particularly Corrections Officers, on a daily basis while also assisting young men and women in New Jersey who are interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice or Emergency Medical Services.
